Route: Wycombe to Chequers
Start: High Wycombe town centre
Distance: 23.5 miles
Terrain: Hilly-a high Altitude extravaganza with some great climbs- especially Whiteleaf Hill up to 771 ft
Roads: primarily quiet roads but with some busier whilst exiting and entering Wycombe.
Total Climb: 1643 feet

Again this is a tremendous Chiltern trek with loads of interest including Hampden House, Chequers ,Coombe Hill and Lacey Green Windmill. You will experience a relatively gentle but continual climb to Hampden, then dropping down out of the Chilterns only to climb back again via Whiteleaf Hill -which is amongst the steepest in the Chilterns. If you require refreshment this route is blest with great rural pubs every few miles.
1.High Wycombe Town(240ft) to Great Hampden(684ft) 5.9 miles.
From the town centre head north along the Hughenden Valley passing Morrisons Supermarket ,and following signs for Hughenden Manor. Continue straight on along the valley for 3 miles passing Hughenden park and Church on the left until you reach the Harrow pub. At the Harrow go right to Bryants Bottom on Warren Dene Lane. In just under ½ mile bear left to Bryants Bottom. In a mile you pass the Gate pub (if you like birds there is an aviary in the pub garden!). Keep climbing gently for another 1 ½ miles through the lovely Hampden Common woods . At the junction at the clearing in the woods bear right. Climb up then at the junction turn right passing the Hampden Arms .
2.Gt Hampden (684ft) to Hampden bottom(521ft) to Chequers(646ft) 3.61 miles
Follow road as it meanders for a mile or so . After the sharp right turn ,passing the entrance to Hampden House take the left hand turn at the crossroads following the brown “Chiltern Cycleway” signs. Enjoy the fast descent to Hampden bottom. Turn left at the junction , then continue on the valley road for 1 mile following Missenden Road. Follow as it bears sharp right to pass the entrance to Chequers. The road climbs as you skirt the estate grounds and enjoy views of the PM’s house and Beacon Hill in the background.
3.Chequers (646ft) to Askett(391ft) 3.27 miles
Continue on the road as it descends loosing 200ft in a mile , enjoying views of Coombe Hill and its Boar war memorial to your right. At Butlers Cross crossroads turn left to Gt Kimble and go through the picturesque Ellesborough village and Church. Turn left at the junction joining the main Risborough-Aylesbury road. Climb up past the Bernard Arms pub(drinking Haunt of many PM’s and presidents-see photos inside pub). In ¾ miles you reach the roundabout at Askett.
4.Askett(391ft) to Lacey Green Windmill(733ft) 4.31 miles
Turn left at the roundabout onto Cadsen Road then next right onto Upper Icknield Way to Whiteleaf village. Pass the Red Lion on your left as the climbing begins. At the junction turn left up Whiteleaf Hill(Peters Lane). This is no easy hill climbing to almost 800ft and is often used as a hill climb challenge by Cycle clubs. Once at the top keep straight on for over a mile retaining all the height you have gained with fantastic views to your right. Take right hand turn at junction to Lacey Green then right again. Keep straight on ,passing the Pink and Lily to your left and retaining the high altitude . There are fantastic views over the Vale of Aylesbury to your right and look out for Lacey Green Windmill.
5.Lacey Green Windmill(733ft)-Saunderton(376ft) 2.46 miles
At the Whip Pub turn left keeping on the flat. If you want to visit the Windmill there is a path by the bus shelter and it is open some weekends in the Summer (owned by the Chiltern Society and the restored working were designed by the son of Barnes Wallace!). Pass the Black Horse pub on your right .After approximately 1 mile turn right down the lovely Smalldean Lane. Enjoy this beautiful descent then at the bottom, at the Golden Cross pub cross over the main road onto Slough Lane.
6.Saunderton(376ft) to Wycombe Town(229ft) 5.45 miles
Slough Lane is a lovely quiet lane with great views and is a great alternative to cycling down the main Wycombe/Risborough road. Follow for 2 miles turning left at the end onto Chorley Road towards West Wycombe. Go left through the village .At the Pedestal Garage roundabout turn right along the A40(West Wycombe Road) back to the town centre.
