In the future will all e.bikes be chainless? |
This may sound like fantasy, but it is likely that you are going to see more bikes with no chain in the future. How is this possible?
Quite simply there are systems on the market now that transfer the power you are creating in the cranks straight to a battery that then powers a motor on the back wheel, via a wire, rather than using a chain to transfer energy.
Essentially you are powering a dynamo that then directly feeds the battery. It sounds logical and has a lot of very real advantages.

No chain, rear derailer, cassette and front derailer. No need for all the items on a bike that tend to cause the greatest number of problems. No filthy chain, no broken chains, no damaged rear mechs, no adjustments. All this complexity removed at a stroke allowing you to just concentrate on the pedalling instead of stressing about the noises and rubbing coming from somewhere. ![]() Pedal back braking and Regan battery charging Not only do you lose the things that cause a headache but there are some features that a chainless system has that have some real benefits. Pedal back braking allows you to slow the bike down without using the brakes, giving you real control and is a unique cycling experience, enabling the rider to intuitively control speed. This process not only slows you down but also send energy back into the battery, extending your range. Not only that but the pedal back feature allows you to go in reverse . Invaluable on any trike . There are also tracking and anti theft features . You can secure your system with a unique pin, lock the system and locate your Trike at any time and any place with the Activ Pilot app on your phone. ![]() |
