All the routes are circular and start primarily from centres of population, so parking and access is simple. The routes are mainly aimed at the leisure cyclist with the average length of a route being a manageable twelve miles (the shortest is six miles - the longest eighteen). As much as possible the routes avoid busy roads and are a mix of on and off road segments through some magnificent countryside and villages. There are suggestions for some alternative bike days out in the rear of the book. The bike is the ideal way to explore and enjoy the fantastic scenery this area is blessed with. We hope that you will enjoy the book and the weather is kind to you! Click here to see an example of one route featured in the book. Maps - The maps in the book are sketches only and not to scale. Distances are approximate only. It is always recommended that you use an OS map in conjunction with 'Local Bike Adventures'. This also gives you the option to extend or shorten the route as necessary. Each route gives you the number of the appropriate OS map. Terrain - The majority of these routes are in the Chilterns so hills are part of the territory but create some wonderful views that you will enjoy. The off road segments add interest and avoid traffic but bear in mind winder can make them muddy and unpleasant. Also, beware of the flints and tree roots you will encounter. Always give way to pedestrians and horses - be aware that cycling is not permitted on footpaths. Safety - A cycle helmet is a must, saving countless lives each year. Wearing one can only be sensible - you can pick up a decent helmet for around £25. Ensure your bike is well maintained and safe. Always carry a space tube, tyre levers and a pump in case of punctures. Take care on the road and dismount and walk if necessary and especially with children. Major busy roads are avoided as much as possible but even on country roads, the driver often has scant regards for the cyclist. Be aware of the traffic around you and be cautious at all times. We also sell Ordinance Survey maps and Sustrans traffic free route guides. Staff in the shop always enjoy suggesting one or two rides you might like to try. |
